Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering is a rapidly evolving discipline integrating biology, medicine and engineering to develop systems and devices to improve health care.

The campus of the biomedical engineering program is geographically located in the Technological Park of São José dos Campos, a government-accredited center, and it is integrated with the Health Technology Innovation Center of the Technological Park, coordinated by the Center for Innovation, Technology and Education (CITÉ). CITÉ is formed by a multidisciplinary group of scientists with R&D&I labs dedicated to the development of health-related technologies, such as computer-assisted health, new materials and prostheses, diagnostic and surgical procedures, therapeutic processes with phototherapy and ozone therapy. Universities including UNIFESP, UNESP and Anhembi Morumbi University together with regional hospital and Oswaldo Cruz Hospital from São Paulo, are close collaborators of CITÉ.

Objective

The Anhembi Morumbi University’s graduate degree in biomedical engineering is offered by an interdisciplinary program that combines a strong foundation in the field with focused coursework and research on a specific area within biomedical engineering. This program trains professionals to work in the engineering-health interface, developing new methodologies, techniques and systems for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of human diseases.

Target Audience

The Anhembi Morumbi University’s program in biomedical engineering is welcomes professionals with diverse training and background, including health and exact sciences.

Program Structure

Course and Thesis/Dissertation Requirement

The program consists of a mix of core courses and electives.

At the start of the program, the student will select a field of biomedical engineering and a corresponding graduation professor associated with the Graduate Program at the Anhembi Morumbi University. Together with a graduation professor, the student will pursue a research project. A committee will examine the thesis based on the student’s research project in order to obtain the academic graduate degree.

Throughout the program, students are supported by a network of experienced faculty supervisors. Through its location in the São José dos Campos Technology Park, the program provides access to various industry, academic and governmental groups residing in the Technology Park. The program has close working relations with the largest hospital complex of Latin America, the metropolitan region of São Paulo and Vale do Paraíba.

Thematic Programs, Research Areas and Courses

Thematic Programs:

Interdisciplinary research between the groups has been realised in the two thematic programs:

  • Therapeutic Systems and Procedures: This thematic program combines the lines of research that aim to assist in the treatment of different pathologies, developing optical systems, photoactivated therapeutic drugs, drugs for heart diseases, phytotherapics, ozone, ultrasound, among others. It also includes the study of biomechanics, balance and rehabilitation, and the development of clinical and hospital instrumentation.

Correlated Research Areas:

Biomechanics and Rehabilitation: This area of research deals with projects that study the biomechanical responses produced by different types of stimuli, which are evaluated using different measurement techniques. The project aims to determine motor dysfunctions based on stabilometric and baropodometric parameters. In addition, techniques and tools related to the rehabilitation in people with motor dysfunctions are being investigated.

Hospital Instrumentation: This area of research includes projects focusing in the development of new clinical and hospital instruments and the improvement of existing equipment.

Translational Medicine: Translational Medicine-related projects involve the transfer of knowledge gained from basic sciences, to be applied in practice/clinic and in the community. Translational research comprises four phases: T1 transfers knowledge from preclinical research to humans, T2, to patients, T3, to clinical practice and T4, to the population. Using a multidisciplinary and multiphase approach, these projects contribute to all phases of this process.

Non-Ionizing Radiation Therapy: This area of research brings together projects that use lasers, LEDs and low and medium power ultrasound to treat different diseases through minimally invasive methods using inclusive photoactive compounds. Similarly, this line of research also explores the use of ozone.

Therapeutic Products: This line aggregates projects that adopt different techniques to develop and characterize new therapeutic products, such as herbal medicines, oxazinic and porphyrin (PDT) dyes, ozone.

2) Systems and Processes for Diagnostics: This thematic program brings together research lines focused on the development of systems and processes, which aim to aid in obtaining information on biological tissues in a minimally or non-invasively way, through optical spectroscopy and biological signal analysis .

Correlated Research Areas:

Development of Techniques and Systems for Diagnostics: This line of research focuses on the development of techniques and optical systems applied to diagnosis of pathological changes in biological tissues and fluids, such as fluorescence spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance and Raman scattering. Mathematical tools based on multivariate statistics will be used, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares regression (PLS).

Computational Tools in Public Health: The area of ​​Public Health requires the multidisciplinary development of mathematical, statistical and computational models, as well as development of computerized systems for data analysis and process improvement, aiming at strategic decision making in the use of SUS resources. Data are available through hospitals, departments and ministry of Health, governmental and non-governmental organizations. It is intended to statistically evaluate data from these organisms, to develop tools (softwares) for management and control of information besides decision making.

 

Biological Signal Processing and Analysis: In this line of research projects focused on electrical signal processing techniques are used to obtain diagnostic information on various diseases that affect humans, particularly myoelectric, electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic signals. The aim is to study musculoskeletal diseases, arrhythmias, cardioprotection, heart rate variability, studies that will guide the choice of the most appropriate therapy.

Courses:

Master in Biomedical Engineering (M.S.): Students must take the four mandatory subjects and four elective subjects.

Doctor in Biomedical Engineering (Ph.D.): Students who obtained a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering must take eight elective subjects other than those taken in the Master’s course. Students who obtained a Master’s degree in another area must take the four mandatory subjects and four elective subjects.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

HALF-YEARLY EXCHANGE PROGRAMS FOR ON-SITE GRADUATION

With 6-months duration and the possibility to extend it to one year, international exchange programs allow the use of subjects taken abroad paying the same monthly tuition fee* charged by Anhembi Morumbi. Students in Bachelor and Licensure courses can participate, being mandatory to attend the first and last year of the course in Brazil.

HALF-YEARLY EXCHANGE PROGRAMS FOR TECHNOLOGICAL GRADUATION COURSES

Duration of 6 months, with the use of subjects studied abroad, paying the same monthly tuition fee* charged by Anhembi Morumbi. Technological Undergraduate students (on-site and blended learning) are eligible to participate, being mandatory to attend the first and last semester of the course in Brazil.

DUAL DEGREE

Students attend part of the course at Anhembi Morumbi University and part at a University in the Laureate Network abroad, obtaining two valid diplomas at the end of the course, which are valid in their respective countries and labor markets.

VACATION OR SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS

They are part of the catalogue of international programs from the Laureate Network and Partner Universities, and are usually offered in the months of January and July. These programs are open to all students and graduates from on-site, blended learning, and distance learning courses.

STUDENT SUPPORT

The International Office – Anhembi Morumbi’s International Department – is responsible for offering students the best exchange program opportunities among the partner universities. It also provides all the support for students to travel safely for their studies abroad, offering:
