The challenge of design for sustainability in the current landscape of the global crisis |
Provide the social, political and economic problematics - guiding the great theme of sustainability - in order to promote a critical reflection on the field of Design in the crisis of post modernity. Investigate the paradigm proposed from the sustainability and point out innovative proposals that are direct related to the field of design. Projects, which are in line with this new vision, will be analyzed, promoting discussion about the interdisciplinary field of view. |

06th November (Friday) 8:00 to 10:00 |
Design and communities - methodologies for product development in craft communities
The designer's activities go beyond designing products for mass. The need to generate income and sustainable development in communities, often located in rural areas, open to the designer a growing space. The contact with people and different cultures, the adequacy and development of products, respecting materials and the traditional know-how, communication and integration with multidisciplinary teams are some challenges that the professional will find. The mini-course will discuss the various methodologies for product development in communities of craft production, whose knowledge is essential to work in this area.

Security, Crime and Sustainability: parallels and convergences applied to design
Study of security as the fundamental need for humans, whose pursuit of satisfaction is preceded only by that which deals with the physiological survival (food, water, air). Study of several aspects that takes the concept 'safety' in today's society and the current paradigm of sustainability. Study of security as fundamental to the development of sustainable societies, addressing the three dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, economic and social. Study of the introduction of the concept of safety in design methodology: approaches to prevent and mitigate human error at the interface with products, systems, services, technology, environment and society. Study design solutions to promote, ensure and enhance human security, reducing crime and victimization: design against crime, mistake-proof design, ergonomics, usability and user-centered design. Essay of negative and positive impacts of solutions existing on the market. |

05th and 06th November (Thursday and Friday) 8:00 to 10:00 |
Events, graphic design, sustainability and their dialogues. |
Introduce the participant in project planning of graphic design for sustainability in events. For this, information will be available at the event space considering the types, shapes and planning stages, identifying the role of graphic design in these phases and introduction to sustainability, considering their economic, social and environmental bases. From the understanding of three areas of knowledge (events, graphic design and sustainability) and reflection on their links, is intended, in a practical way, to identify and develop graphic design guidelines for sustainability in events, so as to enhance the work of organizing designers and events. |

Participatory Design |
Reflecting on the designer's role in participatory processes with communities through practical activities. Discuss placement, intervention strategies and tools to promote the work of the designer as mediator, in delivering results for the community.

DESIS09 (Design for social Innovation and Sustainability) |
The workshop is part of series of workshops called DESIS09, previously performed in China, Africa and Colombia by members of the international network DESIS (www.desis-network.org). We will apply the methodology in Brazil DESIS09 wich, starting from the presentation and discussion of cases of social innovation, promotes an exercise in design, seeking to exemplify solutions and strategies for the improvement and diffusion of those cases that have a recognized value in social and environmental terms.
The workshop, open to the public, will be led by members of national and international network DESIS (Design and Innovation for Sustainability) and will count with special participation of François Jegou (SDS).
DESIS is an international network that brings design schools and other stakeholders together in order to promote and support the actions related to design for social innovation and sustainability. It’ s an no-profit organization, conceived as a network of partners collaborating in a spirit of peer-to-peer and articulated in various networks DESIS locations (China, Brazil, Colombia, USA, Africa, Europe).
